Side Country

I was torn between going for a ridge saw with the guys in canberra or going skiing again. I know tough life eh. The ACT weather was calling light and variable and the sun was shining up the hill so I opted for the skiing. Did a few early runs over on Mt P before heading over the back.

Ski Paralyser ridge for a for a few runs,

(This was the best bit of snow, had to boot up and do it twice :-)
Then over to Perisher Range trig and skied down Old Farm cr to Guthega.
(slow traverse through the trees)
Skied the resort for the rest of the arvo.
More pics (all off my phone again, shitty quality sorry).
Sounds like the wind did turn on just right for the guys in canberra too. Oh well, next time.

Escaping the weekend crowds for an hour or so.
Day Trip BC
Monday, 19 July 2010 10:13
Saturday - light winds, sunshine and fresh snow two days before. I needed little convincing to give the school holiday crowds at the resort a miss and head back country. There were predictions of strong winds on Sunday so I planned for a quick day trip. We've had very little snow this season so I was unsure weather I was going to be able to skin out from guthega, but in the end there was plenty. I followed the well trodden track out to Illawong bridge.

(you can see Mt Twynam on the horizon, it's the round one in the middle.)
Made it out to the ridge that runs out to Watsons Crags about lunch time. Two guys that my path had been crossing all day had already skied down. I followed a similar line and then joined them for another run. We found some pretty nice snow on the second run which was a real highlight. Well that, and you can't beat the scenery.

(This is what we'd come to ski. The north face down into Watsons Cr.)
But alas, for every down hill there is always the going back up. This is where the body decided it had enough, so I took it slow and steady getting back out.

(skinning out of watsons creek)
Took me over an hour and a half to get back to the top of Twynam. This didn't really bother me coz its then a quick / fun ski back down to Illawong. Followed by the arduous final slog back out to guthega.

Took 8hrs, awesome day.
What was the chance

One day in July and the wind turns east, just the right strength so we can have a fly at Lake George.
I nearly didn't make the trip coz I thought it was going to be too light. So glad I made the effort, it's been ages since I've had a chance to have a decent fly.
What a great day. I got to test out my newly re-sailed glider for the first time and it flys awesome.
We even found good lift (for the middle of winter) with climbs to 4000ft.

Trent stuck his new video camera on the keel. It's really cool, gives you a bit of a point of view prospective of hang gliding. I tyred to look for some of the more interesting bits from the 2hr flight coz I know how boring watching some one go around in circles is.
Goodbye see you soon

Had my last flight of my wing last Sunday. It's off to the factory for a nice new sail and a bit of tlc.
It had clocked up 340hrs... arrr good times ; ) But to keep competitive you need all the good gear right?
Even if half of it, is just in your head, it will be nice to have a new wing to fly next season.

The guys have picked out a much better bombout at Pig. Nice up hill with no rocks, awesome. Even a dam to skim (not that I tried).
